Overview

First performed in 1639, the Punakha Dromchoe is a historical reenactment marking Bhutan’s triumph over Tibetan forces in the 17th century. Local militia, known as Pazaps, dress in traditional warrior attire to recreate the battle that safeguarded Bhutan’s sovereignty. This powerful reenactment recalls a time when ordinary villagers, in place of a formal army, defended their land, leading to a period of peace and stability. The ritual concludes with a sacred ceremony in which a relic, Norbu Chu Shani, is ceremoniously immersed in the Mochhu river, drawing large crowds each year.
